The false promise of green jobs
Modern industrial policy has a tension at its heart
I absolutely agree that marrying two aims oftten means netiher is done well.
The government knows Green Deal policy is needed to make healthy plant for future generations but it seems that it needs more detailed steps to consider green jobs. As the writer mentioned, politicians should know how to pick winners. The lack of ability to identify which tech will win out leads to bad investment. A disciplined government that cuts off bad investment can avoid waste. I deemly agree that clarity and transparency when it comes to goals will help politicians jettison weak companies.
However, it is very difficult task that a firm deliver good jobs while not being any greener than its competitors. The writer mentioned that recent strikes by American carmakers were partly motivated by the idea that manufacturing cleaner electric vehicles will mean fewer jobs than assmebling their petrol-powered counterparts.
Two opposite relationship exist to be solved. Firstly, politicians should learn more about how much efforts is needed to excute green deal policy and consider set the priority where to invest to maintain the green jobs.
